Updated: Jul 23, 2023

From Syria (and the levant) 2 Mexico, Tacos El Pastor

Chances are, you've had al pastor tacos at least once in your life. But did you know that this popular dish actually has its roots in the Middle East? That's right—al pastor didn't originate in Mexico. So how did it make its way to the other side of the world? Let's take a trip back in time to find out.

The first al pastor tacos were probably served up in Aleppo, Syria, in the late 19th century. "Shawarma" is made by cooking meat on a rotating spit, and it's believed that the immigrants who settled in Mexico introduced this method of cooking to the local populace.
