Portugal / Brazil - Damasco Apricot

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

From Syria 2 Portugal, Apricots in Portugal are called "Damasco"

The word “Damasco” in Portuguese is derived from Arabic (Dimashq) and can refer to the city of Damascus, apricots, or the apricot tree. An alternate word for apricot in Portuguese is abricó.

The fact that the apricot is known as “Damasco” in both European and Brazilian Portuguese indicates an old association between the fruit and the city. It should also be noted that in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Peru, both the fruit and the city are also known by the word “Damasco”.

It is important to note that the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by Arab and North African people for around 800 years, therefore their contribution to the vocabulary was significant.

The Portuguese words derived from Arabic are usually related to geography, agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, social and legal institutions, chemicals, food and clothing.
